WonHundred Word Wednesday: He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching.

Today’s 100 word story goes with the prompt: He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching.

WonHundred Wednesday 6_11

He paused in the open doorway of his classroom. He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching. There, in the center of the room, were all the desk and chairs.

All stacked together in a large, inverse pyramid.

He tried to see how the single chair on the bottom was supporting the expanse above it, but he didn’t want to get too close.

The room hummed with the alien energy. He was relieved he cleared everyone out in time. So his class—his kids—wouldn’t be anywhere near whatever was in those ships that had appeared above.

Author Interview: Shauna E. Black, FURY OF THE STORM WIZARD

Today our special guest is Shauna Black, featuring her middle grade historical fantasy, Fury of the Storm Wizard. First the cover and the back blurb about the book:

newcover-without top and bottom titles

A Storm is Brewing

In Silver Valley, an unusual string of mining accidents has locals whispering of dark magic. When the marshal sent to investigate goes missing, his young assistant Boone turns to Jesse and Eliza for help. But Jesse is a new mage with raw magic, and Eliza is hiding a secret. The three must learn to trust each other before the valley is destroyed and they are ripped away from everything they hold dear.

Let’s meet the author:authorphoto-sm

Shauna E. Black fell in love at an early age. Her first romances resided on the shelves of the mystery section in the library. She went through The Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and Sherlock Holmes before someone introduced her to The Chronicles of Prydain. This sparked an enduring love for wizards, dragons, magic, and all things fantasy that Shauna still enjoys today. She always has her head in the clouds and her nose in a book.

Naturally, her love for reading evolved into a desire to create, and she became a writer. When she was a young teen, her English teacher made the mistake of offering extra credit for original short stories, and was suddenly swamped with Shauna’s writing. Dutifully reading each story (at least, she wrote encouraging things in the margins), this teacher inspired Shauna to follow her dreams, leaving her with a warm spot in her heart for all English teachers.

Today, Shauna still keeps a box in the attic full of early manuscripts, most written in pencil on lined paper. She lives in the high desert of the southwest with the other loves of her life: her husband and four children. She likes to drag them along on springtime hiking adventures to the many Anasazi ruins near her home, where she finds inspiration for her writing. She also likes to bake bread, do anything artsy, and travel to exotic locations to collect wind chimes.

And now, based upon the title of the book, our interview questions with Shauna:

S is for Setting: Where does your story take place and what is special about this location?

Fury of the Storm Wizard is a historical fantasy that takes place in the late 1800s in a Colorado mining town. I chose this location because my ancestors worked the silver mines in that area. Although my novel’s town has a different name, it’s based on the mountain community of Lake City, Colorado. I love the mountains and the greenery and the lake in that area, but my character doesn’t like it so much. He’s from Kansas, so he feels boxed in by the mountains all around him.

T is for Trials: What are some of the things (no spoilers) that your characters learn through their trials?

Jesse is the main character. He has a lot of difficult things happen to him in a short amount of time. When his mother dies, he is struck by lightning that gives him powerful wild magic he can’t control at first. Then, his father moves them from the Kansas prairie to the Colorado mountains. He starts to really overcome these trials when he meets Boone (a dragon who can transform into a human) and finds out Boone has gone through similar things, but doesn’t let them get him down. Jesse overcomes his own trials with the support of his family and friends, and learns that he is worthy of being loved, in spite of his mistakes. That knowledge helps him to have courage when he most needs it.

O is for Origins: How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I went to a writing conference where the speaker talked about a line popping into her head that started her first novel. It inspired me. I went home mulling over her talk and all of a sudden a line popped into my head: “Sometimes your mother really does know best. She always said I would come to a sticky end. Of course, my mother was a two-headed dragon.” Along with the words, came a picture of a dragon tangled in rope, hanging over an abandoned mine shaft. I wrote it first as a short story, but discovered that I loved the characters so much that I was compelled to turn it into a novel. Through many revisions, that first line was eventually cut, but Boone still gets tangled in rope over a mine shaft somewhere in the middle of the book.

R is for risks: What would your main characters each say is their greatest risk they have undertaken? How about yours?

When Jesse tells Boone about the huge weight of guilt he carries over the death of his mother and the harmful things his magic has done, he makes himself vulnerable. But he’s rewarded for finally opening up when he and Boone become friends.

As for me, probably the greatest risk I’ve ever taken is in publishing this book. I hope that doesn’t sound cheesy. 🙂 I’m naturally a very shy person, so the idea of putting myself out there in the public eye as a published author is a pretty daunting one, for me. You kind of bleed your heart and soul into writing a book, so it’s also frightening to offer that up as a sacrifice to the critics out there in the world. Will anybody like it? Will they rip it to shreds? I’ve dreamt of being a published author all my life. When I went through a bout with cancer a couple of years ago, I decided that I would no longer let my fear keep me from realizing my dream. But as I was going through the process of getting the book ready for publication, I kept having these little panic attacks. So I would listen to a song my kids like called Go by the McClain Sisters, and there’s one line that says “Don’t be scared, just go!” I would repeat this mantra to myself and try to overcome my fears. It also helped to remember that I had already done something really hard, in overcoming cancer, so I knew I could do this publication thing. I like to visit schools and talk about that with the kids, let them know that they can have courage and overcome things in their lives that seem hard.

M is for magic- I love magic. How does the magic work in your world. Accessible to few or all? Does everyone know it exists?

One of the characters in an earlier incarnation of Fury of the Storm Wizard said something to the effect that magic always comes in a traumatic way, when life deals a potential wizard a rough blow. For example, when Jesse’s mother dies, he’s hit by lightning that sparks the magic already inside him. Then the new wizard has to learn to control this wild magic. So, magic can do wonderful things, but it’s also very powerful and dangerous and requires a strong will to master, in addition to training. A trained wizard, or mage as I call them, works magic by using glyphs—like petroglyphs or hieroglyphs. They get this training at a place called the Veiled Canyon, which is similar to Mesa Verde, only populated with people who have magic and know about it. So, magic is hidden from the general population. Boone is strictly forbidden from turning into his dragon form where non-magical people might see him; but of course, he breaks the rules now and again.

Wizards–  What are the Storm Wizards and are there other types?

A thundermage is the “technical” term for a storm wizard, and that’s what Jesse is. It’s one of the most powerful types of wizards because he can control the weather. I based his acquisition of magic on a real live event: the violent tornado systems that moved through Kansas and nearby states in 1896 and were labeled at that time “The Storm of the Century.” By the way, this is the same event that the Wizard of Oz is based on (the tornado that carries Dorothy to Oz). Other types of wizards with specialized powers include terramage, mirrormage, and dragonmage. You’ll have to read the book to find out what they do. 😉

WonHundred Word Wednesday: In all the years I’ve lived here, I never once called this place my home.

Today’s 100 word story is based on the prompt: “In all the years I’ve lived here, I never once called this place my home.”

WonHundred Wednesday 6_4
I began pacing again.

My fingers trailed in the dust, leaving an intricate pattern that would be sure to confuse.

In all the years I’ve lived here, I never once called this place my home.

My home would be warm and full of laughter. It would be bright with colors: yellows and reds and purples. Artwork and music.

This? This is silence. This is muted tones of grays and white with golden accents. Statuary and dirges.

This is cold marble. Cold like my body within the casket.

I’m always careful not to look at my name on the stone marker.

WondHundred Word Wednesday: do NOT open your eyes.

Today’s prompt for the 100 word story is: “No matter what you hear, no matter how badly you want to, do NOT open your eyes.”

WonHundred Wednesday 5_28

Here’s the funny thing. When I first heard the prompt, I was thinking something more Indiana Jones-esque. But, then I was riding with my family-listening to a Peter Gabriel album-and the song ‘Intruder’ came on.

And I listened to the lyrics.

And my brain took off in a different direction.

Thanks a lot, brain. Thanks. A. Lot.  The Story:

Amelia stretched in bed, eyes closed, darkened room silent. Her long hair cascaded off of the bed’s edge. A tug at her hair from the floor made her brace for her cat’s arrival. Captain Meowcolm Reynolds always batted her hair before jumping.

But there was no leaping cat. Then she heard his growl…outside.

She thought, “Amelia, no matter what you hear, no matter how badly you want to, do NOT open your eyes.”

But she had to. The handful of hair she pulled back from the edge had been cut straight off.

Then she heard the whispers from the floor.

In case you were wondering about that song:  (enjoy 😉 )

WonHundred Word Wednesday: The truth about love is. . .

Our prompt for this week’s 100 word story was: “The truth about love is. . .”

WonHundred Wednesday 5 21

McKenzie shook the magic eight ball. “Come on, the truth about love is…” She sighed in disbelief. “Ask again later? What kind of answer is that?”

Steven, her best friend of twelve years, snorted. “That thing isn’t going to tell you.”

“Oh yeah? And what do you know?”

Steven stepped up close to her. “I know the answer.” He tucked her hair behind her ear and left his hand there, his thumb lightly brushing across her cheek. Her breath caught, heart suddenly pounding. “The truth about love is, it’s patient.” He moved slowly, his lips softly brushing hers. “Very patient.”

Something is growing?

Look, something is growing! 🙂

Ignore the bright toxic-orange substance. That is just cayenne pepper. I am hoping it keeps the cats from using my garden as a litter box.

Just to give you perspective, this is what my garden has looked like for years. I call it my gourmet salad garden. Because, dandelion greens.

We will have to see what all will grow and what I can keep growing and not lose focus halfway through the season.

Book Feature: Warrior Everlasting by Wendy Knight

I present, Wendy Knight’s second book in the Riders of Paradesos series: Warrior Everlasting.

you can find it on Amazon here, or on Barnes and Noble here.

@Warrior Everlasting

What it’s about:

Fighting alongside the boy you shouldn’t love is hard enough. Doing it while riding a unicorn who would gleefully fly to her death with you on her back is worse. What makes it insane?

 Doing it in hell.

Scout and her unicorn, Ashra, risked everything just to make it into Aptavaras. Their plan is to free Scout’s family and the stolen souls, and seek vengeance on the man who took everything Ashra had once lived for. What they hadn’t counted on was Trey and his unicorn, Torz, following them.

It might be the only thing that will save them.

Because in Aptavaras, the soul stealers are many and the chances of survival are slim. Even if they can get past the demons, trick the demon master, rescue the souls and escape with their lives, there’s only one person who can open the gate, and he’s on the outside defending the world. But Scout, Trey, Ashra and Torz have one thing the soul stealers don’t—

 A reason to live.

A sneak peak snippet:

“You’re mad.”

She sighed. “I’m too tired for this right now, Trey. If you want Kylin, then—”

He glared at her. “You lose faith in me that quickly, Scout? I’ve been in love with you since I was eight years old. See these?” He held up his arm with the leather bands tied around his wrist. “Nine of them. One for each year I’ve loved you. I loved you when you hated me. I loved you when you were dancing for some other guy. I loved you when I watched you throw yourself off your unicorn eight billion feet above the ground.” Scout opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Instead, tears trickled down her cheek. Finally, she knew what those leather bands meant. And her heart swelled.

“Just because I talk to Kylin doesn’t mean I’m going back to her. What have I ever done to make you doubt me, Scout? And if you say the hospital—” His glare was more fierce than she’d ever seen it. Clearly, he’d heard enough about the hospital.

Scout smiled, scrubbing at her tears. “Nothing, Trey. You’ve done nothing to make me doubt you. I’m sorry. I’m just tired and insecure.”

His hand shot out, circling her waist, and he pulled her into him, so close she could feel his heart pounding inside his chest, and he kissed her like he would literally die if he didn’t. There was pain and fury and hope and love in that kiss. Scout rose on her toes and slid her arms around his neck, kissing him back, hoping he could feel that she felt the same way.

My thoughts:

Wow. I fell in love with these characters in the first book and this one didn’t disappoint. This is the unicorn story for people who don’t like unicorns. They battle soul stealing demons and they rock. This story had a lot of moments where you thought ‘ oh, they are never going to make it’ and they do. The battles are awesome and the people are broken, real and full of history that they need to learn to overcome. I love that Scout is the best big sister. Her focus on her sister and their bond is wonderful. I also really liked the ‘big bad guy’. He wasn’t evil just for evil’s sake, he was understandable, pitiable, and yet- still a monster. I am looking forward to the next installation in the story!

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “You find a box in the attic that isn’t yours.”

The next 100 word story based on the prompt: “You find a box in the attic that isn’t yours.”

WonHundred Wednesday 5_14

“David? Did you already put something up here?”

His voice was muffed behind the stack of moving boxes. I stood on the ladder to the attic and stared. The space was empty except one thing, right in the middle. A box. Not a cardboard box, or a lovely hat box, or even a wooden box.

This monstrosity looked older than our ancient house—hewn from stone and covered in markings resembling the runes I’d seen in a Norse drinking game. Chains surrounded it, rusting as they sat.

I watched and the box lurched forward an inch.

“Honey? Come here please…”

LDStorymakers Writing Conference

I just returned from the best weekend! I was at an amazing conference – LDStorymakers.

I learned so much – I will be sharing some things in the coming weeks- and had a great time hanging out with other crazy people that love writing!

Publication Primer Group

This is my ‘Publication Primer’ group. It is a type of intensive critique group with a published author as a mentor. We lucked out and had two wonderful author/instructors: Renee Collins and Tyler Jolley. I had a great time meeting the other writers in my group and reading the beginnings to their stories.

IMG_0340_fix

Yay for writing buddies! These are some of the amazing people I have met through the iwritenetwork.com chatroom. We meet in there and brainstorm, chat, or sprint (set a time limit and see how much writing/editing/whatever we can finish in that time and then check back in). It was really fun to hang out with them in person.

It is also one of the very few pictures I took at the conference. I always think ‘Oh, I will get my picture taken with the authors that I fangirl’ and then I get there and don’t even ask for a photo while they sign my books. Maybe someday I will remember/dare pull out the camera :D.

One thing I always do at these conferences. . . buy books. Seriously. I saved my Christmas monies.

To give you an idea of my. . . problem (I don’t have a problem!):

This is a picture of my ‘to read’ bookcase in my room. Keep in mind that it only shows the front layer, there is another set of books behind the ones you can see. That doesn’t count the pile in the library I still need to read either, or the ebooks. *sigh*

To read

So, what do I do?

new shiny books

I bring home a literal bag of new (signed!) books.

They followed me home! Honest 🙂

But really, how can you resist a new book? What I need now, is time to read!

What books/movies/hobbies do you like to look forward to?
