WonHundred Word Wednesday: He looked at his phone, turned pale, than quickly left the room.

June 17 2015

Today’s prompt is: He looked at his phone, turned pale, than quickly left the room. Here is my take on the 100 word story based on that.

The party was running full swing. The bass notes from the music thumped through the whole house.  Melanie glanced at her watch. Still hours until her parents would be home. No worries yet.

This party would cement her place as head cheerleader. It had too.

            “Hadn’t you guys heard?”

Melanie brought her attention back to her friend.

“They said he got a strange text. A picture. The next day he disappeared.”

“I don’t believe it.” Melanie scoffed.

Ben’s phone signaled a message. He looked at his phone, turned pale, than quickly left the room.

Every phone in the room rang.

Now you can check out the other authors’ stories based on the same prompt! Enjoy 🙂

WonHundred Word Wednesday: With him, she’d had some wonderfully stable times

June 10 2015

Last week’s prompt was: “With him, she’d had some wonderfully stable times.” My 100 word story on the prompt follows:

She stretched and patted the side of her horse.

And then did a double-take.

The horse’s coat was changing from the usual midnight-black, to fire-engine red. She sighed and looked over at her companion, Jeff. He had already dismounted and begun to set up camp. With him, she’d had some wonderfully stable times.

But stable wasn’t supposed to be her thing, was it. Was she one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, or wasn’t she?

“War?” Jeff’s voice called across the campground. “Goin’ somewhere?”

“I guess I am.” She indicated the horse’s color change. “End of times and all.”

WonHundred Word Wednesday: It started with a chance meeting on a film-set.

June 3 2015

Today’s 100 word flash fiction has a very shiny visual aid. I figured that looked more ‘Hollywood’. Right?  Hmmmm, maybe not.

Despite the garishness of the glitter, we will move on. The prompt for this week is: It started with a chance meeting on a film-set. This is my take:

It started with a chance meeting on a film-set. Jake tried, unsuccessfully, to ignore her for hours. But those eyes. And she was so sweet.

So of course he had to take her home. Who abandons a tiny kitten like that anyway?

Now grown up, Ginger was the queen of his castle. And she was a viciously good judge of character. Whenever Jake began dating someone, he always had to introduce them to his cat. She would let him know—in no uncertain terms—what kind of person the girl was.

Kim was the first to pass the Ginger test.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: He had kept their mother alive in their thoughts. Too alive, perhaps.

May 27 2015

Day late and a dollar short, but I have my flash fiction! We are doing 100 word stories based on a set prompt. This week’s prompt is: He had kept their mother alive in their thoughts. Too alive, perhaps.  Here is my take on the story:

Kim entered the kitchen and immediately dropped her coffee. It splashed over her feet, but she didn’t notice. She stared at her brother.

“Tim. This has gone too far.”

He whirled around, threw his hands to his hips, pursed his lips and tapped his foot. “I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The tapping continued.

“I miss mom too, Tim.” Kim hesitated. He had kept their mother alive in their thoughts. Too alive, perhaps. “But, you’re wearing her robe. And talking like her.”

Tim ran his hand over the pearl buttons. “It’s a house coat, not a robe.”

WonHundred Word Wednesday: The text message simply said ‘very clever’

May 20 2015

Today’s prompt for our 100 word story is: The text message simply said ‘very clever’.

Nicola leaned back from the keyboard and stretched—cracking her back and then moving on to all her other joints. She stared at the computer screen with the hypnotic blinking cursor. The blinking cursor signaling the end of her masterpiece.

This is the virus that will show them. This will show corporate that the lives of those downwind really do matter.

With a deep breath, she uploaded it onto what had once been thought a secure server.

And then sat back to watch.

Her phone buzzed and she hesitated, unsure of her success.

The text message simply said ‘very clever’.

Now you can see the others’ take on it:

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “She hadn’t realized she’d buried her memories of her teenage years.”

may 6 2015

Today’s prompt for our 100 word flash fiction is: “She hadn’t realized she’d buried her memories of her teenage years.”

Here is my take:

Cami bounced slightly on her toes, watching as the parade filed past.  She hadn’t been back to her hometown for twenty years. It had seemed like a good time to change that. A group of clowns poured past her. Something in the back of her mind felt off, but she couldn’t put a finger on it.

“I can’t believe you can watch them so calmly,” Clark said.

     “What do you mean?”

“Are you kidding? You. Held captive by the clown creeper for two days.”

     None of that sounded familiar.

She hadn’t realized she’d buried her memories of her teenage years.

Now you can see what some other authors did with that same prompt, enjoy!

Sabbatical Concluded

Boom. We’re back!

Albeit with a bit less style than ^that. 🙂

My sabbatical is done. I learned some things, I think I have health issues balanced (at least adjusted), and I will have some fun news coming up in the next few months.

These are my new cute toes:

AMWoodsPurplePurpose

Okay, so they aren’t new toes. I haven’t gone with the total toe transplant yet. BUT, the polish is new. And the color?

Purple With Purpose

Isn’t that a cool nail polish name?

And so that’s what we have now, purpose. Awesome.

Let’s do this! 🙂

Sabbatical of Sorts: What?

Hello! Hi, there. Howdy. Welcome! 🙂

A little update on me and the blog. (Be forewarned that this post will be very GIF and photo heavy.) The blog will be on an unofficial/official hiatus for a bit.

I see you rolling your eyes and laughing at me.

But, since you look so good doing it, all is forgiven.

I picked up this book at the library, hoping it would help.

IMG_1411adj

Wait. 400 pages!? I’m supposed to be able to focus on that long enough to have it help? If I could do that, I wouldn’t need the book.

It is true.

So, you know those really cool people that can juggle thirty balls, two flaming jack-o-lanterns, and a chain saw? Imagine I was going to do that act.

But I have never juggled before in my life.

I keep dropping everything. But when it is time to throw the next ball in, I keep saying ‘sure, throw it in!’

And then, with a million items to juggle all around me at my feet. I can’t figure out which one to pick up and start with. So none of them get juggled.

It doesn’t work so well with gourds of flame and sharp power tools.

So I am just going to put this picture here right now.

alisonmillerwoods potato crispy treats

“What is that?” Good question.

It is a sight to behold. Potato Chip Crispy Treats.

Does that name work? Maybe PotMarsh. . . no.

PotatoMallow. . . hmm.

Anyway, it is wavy potato chips with melted marshmallows. Like Rice Crispy Treats only salty/sweet.

Where was I?

Oh, right. My sabbatical.

I am planning on learning how to juggle. But I need to start with basics, like three balls.

Or one.

I need to learn how to catch one ball first.

So I am paring down ‘Teh Internets’ until I get things together.

Then I will TOTALLY be like Batman.

And I will nail it on the ‘first try.’ 😀

So, the TL;DR version (Because believe me, I understand.):

I am kind of a mess 😉 and I am backing slowly away from the internet (No sudden moves!) until I get things organized.

Catch you on the flip side!

Author Interview: Sara Burr, UNDERGROUND ROSE

Today I am featuring a brand new release from Sara Burr. It is an upper-middle grade/young YA fantasy about witches called UNDERGROUND ROSE. You can find it here. I also have a fun interview with her that we will get to. But first, the book.

UndergroundRose_453x680

After her surprise discovery of a mystical gift, fourteen-year-old Rose Wilson thinks her life is ruined. It turns out she comes from a long line of gifted women, and despite her protests, Rose’s mom ships her off to her grandmother’s house to spend the summer learning about her family’s well-hidden secrets. To make matters worse, Rose is expected to carry out this tradition alongside her mousy, bookworm cousin, Megan. What a waste of a summer.

With some effort, Rose and Megan manage to find common ground and by the time they get home, they’re working together to adjust to their new life. But everything is turned upside down again when their families are exposed by witch hunters who call themselves The Witches’ Hammer. With killers on the loose, their tiny town isn’t safe anymore. Rose’s entire family is fragmented and forced to flee through a network of hiding places, dubbed The Witches’ Underground Railroad.

As she journeys to the sea, Rose learns more and more about who she really is. The closer she gets to her destination, the more danger she encounters, until she is forced to make the ultimate decision: follow her family’s edict of non-violence and become an orphan, or save her mom’s life.

Oh, fun! And how about a really cool moment from the book:

A pool of blood already surrounded Amber’s head, and she was as pale as a ghost. Her breathing was shallow and labored.

Rose started parting her wet hair, little by little, trying to find the wound. Finally, after the longest minute of her life, she found it. The wide cut was right on the crown of Amber’s head – how could she have missed that? – and it was bleeding fast.

Fighting not to gag at the metallic smell, Rose put her hands on the slippery gash and pushed, like the lady said, but the blood just seeped through her fingers. The bleeding wasn’t stopping. Was she doing it right?

Feeling completely helpless, she began to sob.

She didn’t dare leave Amber again to go back to the phone.

“I don’t know what to do!” she cried out. “Help,” she croaked, knowing no one could hear. “Please help.”

Suddenly, she felt something strange happening, deep inside her chest. A comforting warmth, like hot chocolate on a freezing cold day, heated her from the inside out. It spread and expanded from her chest, bubbling and tingling like a fizzy drink, growing like wild morning glory vines, covering every part of her insides.

Was it coming from her heart?

It grew until she felt like she couldn’t contain all that heat for one second longer. Then, when she thought she might just explode, the heat-vines raced down her arms. An effervescent mixture of blue, pink, and purple light exploded from her hands, and surrounded Amber’s head like a quivering, transparent cocoon.

Rose sucked in a breath and blinked in disbelief.

She was frozen – afraid to move or even breathe. She stared with her mouth agape, her emerald eyes wide, as the bleeding slowed.

What the heck is happening? she thought. Is this a dream?

She didn’t understand what she was seeing. Was it … magic?

The glimmering cocoon continued pulsating from her fingertips, surrounding Amber’s head. Rose didn’t dare let go, for fear of undoing this miracle.

Then Amber started to stir.

This was not something Rose wanted to discuss. What kind of a freak would Amber think she was? Reluctantly, she removed her hands.

The vines of warmth snapped back into her, like a recoiling measuring tape. Then, the peculiar sensation was gone. No more heat. No more colors. She looked at her hands in a mixture of awe and disgust.

What was that? she asked herself.

She didn’t know, but she was glad it was over.

A few short seconds later, Amber opened her eyes. Her face so pale her freckles looked three dimensional and her icy blue eyes were even more clear than usual.

Now, for the interview. As usual, I like to ask questions based upon the letters in the title of the book.

UNDERGROUND ROSE

Underground:  In the book, Rose has to go ‘underground’ to hide from some dangerous people. If you had to go underground, what three things would you take with you and why?

My family. I could never run away from the bad guys without them.

My Kindle. ‘Cause Rose was bored the whole time. She played a lot of cards. My Kindle has a lot of books on it that I’ve never had time to read.

My laptop. So I could keep on writing. I go crazy if I don’t write. Also, Facebook and Pinterest, although I guess it would be really hard to stay anonymous if you were using social media. Maybe I could just be a lurker.

R is for “Relationships: What types of things (without too many spoilers) do your main characters learn about their relationships with others?

Well, I think Rose learns that she’s too quick to judge, not just people, but their intentions and emotions. She learns a lot about empathy and how to see what’s under the surface.

I think Megan learns to put herself out there more, and to speak up for her own needs better.

And I think Amber learns to be there for Rose, when it’s always been the other way around. She’s always leaned on Rose, and it’s nice to see that switch toward the end of the book. It makes Amber more powerful and Rose more vulnerable.

O is for “Origins” – What is the story behind this story? How did you come up with the idea for this book?

I had this job working in a call center and it sometimes got kind of boring in between calls, so I brought a notebook and started writing just for fun. I knew the three main characters, Rose, Amber, and Megan. And I knew that the story would start when Amber had an accident and Rose discovered her magic by healing her. But I didn’t know what would happen next.

So, I wrote what I did know; it took me three chapters. At the end of those three hand-written chapters, I went to bed one night, and while I was trying to go to sleep, it just came to me. Two words: Underground Railroad. And I knew the rest of it from there.

S is for “Struggle”: What sort of things do your main characters struggle with and did you learn anything about yourself as they worked through their struggles?

Yes, it mirrors my life a lot. My characters continually thought they were free of their struggles, only to be struck down by adversaries again. During the time that I wrote this book, and again the time I edited, my life was very much like this. I am happy to say that we all finally came out on top.

E is for “Exciting: What is the most exciting thing for you about your book and the story or the process of it coming about?

They say writing is a form of wish fulfillment. I completely agree. The places that Rose visits in the Underground Railroad are places that I fondly remember from my childhood. Although I am not from Washington or Oregon, I had a lot of family there and spent many happy summers there.

In between the first draft and the second, I got to visit the Oregon Coast for the first time in many years. After I left, I was online looking at real estate. Circumstances made that an impossible dream, but I’m happy that Rose ended up there.

Thanks, Sara! (I LOVE the Oregon coast too…)

Here is a little about Sara and where to find her. Happy Reading!

Sara Burr

Sara has been entranced by the written word for as long as she can remember. The daughter of a school teacher, she fell in love with books as soon as she could read them. She wrote her very first story, about a girl who ran away and hid in her cousin’s lilac bush, when she was just eleven. Although her stories have grown more complicated and less petulant since then, Sara still loves to entertain kids with her words.

When she isn’t writing, Sara has a big family to keep her busy: a husband who is her other half, and four children who are wonderfully individual. They live next to a beautiful lake in a tiny town with no street lights. Sara spends lots of time taking care of little superheroes. She likes to camp with her family, enjoys traveling, and hopes to see the Northern Lights someday.

WonHundred Word Wednesday (And a new project)

Today I am late with the 100 word story. In fact, I have two weeks worth here since I missed last week.

So it is like a two-for-one deal today! Which is great. Unless you count your cost as the time it takes to read the stories and then this will take twice as long. So. . .

Anyway. My friends and I are doing a fun little project. As part of it, I am going to take one of the 100 word stories from our prompts and expand it into a short story. Now the hard part is choosing which one I want to delve into. Decisions.

Last week’s prompt was: “She went to the toilet and on her way back, opened the wrong door.” While this week’s prompt was: “Spider threads caught at her face, a sign that no-one had been there yet.”

January 14

This morning, Nadine came out of her class at the community college to find her moped with two slashed tires. Who slashes the tires on a Vespa?

She caught the bus; however, with the detour due to road construction, she was late for work.

And showing up short of breath and sweaty to work at the perfume counter? Not cool.

Her date with Kern should have been perfect. But, she went to the toilet and on her way back, opened the wrong door.  The jewel thieves in the kitchen, stuffing the fish with diamonds, were not happy.

“Worst. Day. Ever.”

January 21

Marsha stepped into the cave opening. Her flashlight cast a feeble light as she crept. Spider threads caught at her face, a sign that no one had been there yet.

Except. There is something odd about this web.

She found a strand of the web and rubbed it slowly. The wrong kind of sticky. Scrunching up her face, she brought the web up to her mouth. She cautiously licked the strand.

“Cotton Candy?” Marsha glared into the darkness. “Peaches, you dastardly clown, you are here. Somewhere.”

She strode into the dark, determined to end the jester’s reign of circus terror.

Now you can check out what my writing friends have done with their 100 word story based on this same prompt. Enjoy 😀
