Hello!

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town”

September 17

This week’s prompt for our 100 word story is: “Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town.”  Here is my take and then you can read what the other authors did with this same prompt!

Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town was that of the giant oak tree. And the dead body that hung from it.

John was seven before he realized that no one else could see the man hanging from the branch, twisting gently in the nonexistent breeze.

            There were others as well.

When his momma sang with the church choir, her voice carrying the gospel music to the rafters, others would join in. They stood with their hats in their hands, or dresses freshly starched, swaying and belting out the songs.

But no one else could hear them.

Now check out the others’ 🙂

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “She had found something that would mean she’d never be poor, but there was a catch…”

September 10

Each week we (a group of authors) take the same prompt and then each write a 100 word story about it. This week’s prompt is: “She had found something that would mean she’d never be poor again, but there was a catch…”

I believe I was in an odd mood while writing this one, you be the judge 🙂 .

Cathy had found something that would mean she’d never be poor again – but there was a catch, she could never eat chocolate again.  Oh, and she was slowly being driven insane.

When the cheap, hollow chocolate Easter bunny—with the googly, sugar eyes—first spoke to her, it was hard to believe. It begged her not to bite its ears off in exchange for treasures.

It seemed like an easy promise: no chocolate, no poverty.

But then, the bunny wouldn’t stop talking. The sound followed her everywhere. And Cathy wondered just how sweet those waxy chocolate ears would taste.

Now you can check the others’ versions! Enjoy –

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “The fire was getting closer.”

This week’s prompt is: “The fire was getting closer.” My take on the 100 word story is this:

the fire grew closer 9_3_2014

Joseph shuffled across the cabin floor. He still wore his official, green Forest Service pants. But, years after retirement, the work shirts didn’t fit quite right anymore. He settled for a t-shirt.

He muttered at the moth-eaten, bearskin rug near the fireplace. “Don’t you roll your eyes at me, son. I put you on that floor and I will make sure you stay there.”

He stepped outside. The tremor in his hands stilled when he grasped the shovel and the hose with determination. The fire was getting closer. It wouldn’t take his cabin, Beverly’s last resting place, without a fight.

There are a bunch of other authors who are also writing their 100 word story based upon this prompt. Check them out too 🙂

WondHundred Word Wednesday: “She decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice…”

I am slow on last week’s 100 word story. So, here is the prompt and my take on it!

“She decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice…”

Melinda settled down in the grass and leaned her back against the cool granite of the tombstone. She had decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice. She pulled the cigar, his favorite brand, out of her jacket and heaved a sigh.

“Daddy, I know you are super busy. But, I could really use your help.” The silence seemed to mock her. “I don’t know what to do next with my current case.”

The distinct scent of cigar smoke drifted past on the breeze, accompanied by a whisper. “Check the box in the victim’s closet.”

            Melinda grinned.

WondHundred Wednesday: “He had waited twenty years to return it.”

Wednesday! A group of author receives a prompt and writes a 100 word story from it. It is fun to see the different directions they head. This is my take on the prompt “He had waited twenty years to return it.”

WonHundred Wednesday 8_20

Darren gripped the small box in his hand. He had waited twenty years to return it. He looked around his hometown, first time in decades, with new eyes.

“Sorry it took me so long to come back around, Ma.” He shuffled his feet in the silence. “I wish Annie and Molly could have come so they could meet you. Molly is getting her first teeth in and is cute as a button.”

He opened the box and pulled out the broken earing. He set it, and a fresh daisy, down gently on the headstone. “I think you’d be proud, Ma.”

Author Interview: Tifani Clark SHADOW OF A LIFE

Tifani Clark Blog Tour Banner

I have another author interview today! Today we are visited by Tifani Clark, the author of “Shadow of a Life” (Soul Saver Book 1) — a ghost story based upon the mysterious real life story of the ship Mary Celeste. So, first the cover and a bit about the book:

Shadow of a Life Cover

Jamie Peters plans to spend the summer before her junior year with her nose stuck in a book—not saving lost souls. Usually the girl that blends into the crowd, Jamie’s world is turned upside down when a mysterious ghost begins to follow her.

But Sophia isn’t just any ghost.

A hundred years earlier, Sophia’s disappearance sparked a national mystery that remained unsolved. Jamie knows the legends surrounding Sophia’s disappearance, but she never dreamed she would find out what really happened . . . or that her family might have had something to do with Sophia’s disappearance.

Determined to set Sophia free, Jamie blows the dust off her family’s past and unearths clues to discover what she must do to save Sophia’s soul. She enlists the help of childhood friend—and secret crush—Peter Ashby as she sets off on a dangerous quest to find a missing map. Spending the night in a graveyard, crawling through a dilapidated barn, and staring down the barrel of a gun aren’t enough to deter Jamie from helping Sophia. But can she find the answers she needs before another ghost gets revenge on her and Sophia?

You can find the book here on Amazon or here on Barnes and Noble

Tifani - Author Photo

Tifani Clark grew up on a farm in southeastern Idaho (yes, that’s where they grow all the potatoes) as the middle of five children. She had a lot of space to imagine and daydream and often pictured herself as a character in one of the many books she read. She was habitually found pretending to be Scarlet O’Hara. Tifani loves mystery and hates it when one goes unsolved. She is married to the love of her life and is the mother to four fabulous children. When not writing, she enjoys playing the violin and piano and traveling to new places. She especially enjoys visits to national parks and places of historical significance.

Tifani can be found here: http://www.tifaniclark.blogspot.com/

Now to our interview, based upon the book’s title.

Shadow of a Life

S is for Setting:  Can you tell us about the setting for your book and why you chose that place?

Shadow of a Life takes place in Marion, Massachusetts. The setting for this book was an easy decision for me. Since the book is based on a true story, I chose to focus on the town where the real Sophia Briggs lived. I did a lot of research about the town in an effort to make it as accurate as possible. I even got a close-up look at the town thanks to Google Earth! Some of the places the characters go are real (like the cemetery and the library), but the restaurant they frequent is fictitious.

H is for  Hobbies: What are your favorite things to do?

I have all kinds of things that I enjoy doing. Sometimes it just depends on the day. I play the violin and piano and I have a couple of violin students. I obviously enjoy writing, and reading is just as great. With my family, I love to travel. We want to visit all 50 states and we’re doing pretty good so far.

A is for Advice: What piece of advice would Jamie, Peter, and Sophia each give?

Jamie: “Ordinary people can do extraordinary things.”

Peter: “Life’s an adventure. Hang on and enjoy the ride.”

Sophia: “Always have hope in the future and never give up.”

D is for Danger: Your main character, Jamie, has to face some dangerous things. What would she say she is most afraid of?

Failure. Jamie isn’t afraid of things like spiders, and snakes, and heights…and ghosts. She lacks confidence in herself and is terrified that she won’t accomplish what she set out to do. As the book progresses, her confidence builds and she is able to overcome that fear of failure.

O is for obstacles: What sort of obstacles do your characters overcome (without spoilers) and what do you feel you learned from writing their journey?

My characters find themselves in a few tricky and dangerous situations. Probably the biggest obstacle that the living characters have to overcome is to actually believe in ghosts and a different reality than they’ve ever lived before. The ghost characters have to put their trust in those who are living and that is kind of hard for them.

W is for  “What next”: So what is next for you? Do you have other books in the works?

The first sequel to Shadow of a Life is finished and in the editing phase and the second sequel is in the planning stages. Hopefully it will be completed by the end of the year. I’ve finished a couple other books (Young Adult Suspense) that I’m getting ready to market as well.

Life  If you had a chance as a ghost, to do one thing that you didn’t get an opportunity to do in this life, what would you pick?

Good question! This one made me think. Hmm… I want to see the world. I am fascinated with history and culture and life. I would have to say that I would use my “ghost powers” to travel the world and see things from a non-tourist view. It’s easier to truly experience a new culture when you don’t have tourist written across your forehead.

The book looks really interesting, I’m excited to read it. Thanks for being here today Tifani!

One prompt. 100 words.  This week’s prompt is “Spare some change, please?” Check out my version and then you can go see what awesomeness the other authors came up with based on the same prompt!

From where I sat on the park bench, I could see the front of the ambassador’s home. I watched closely over the newspaper, sunglasses hiding my eyes—and my earpiece.  The homeless man shuffled up the sidewalk near me.  I had already sized him up and found his weak points—if it came to that—the leg with the limp and the arm held closely to his side.  He paused near the bench.

                “Spare some change, please?”

I didn’t turn my head.  “Jake.” I sighed. “For this mission to work we can’t be seen together.”

                He chuckled and shambled away.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room.”

This is the day again, Wednesday! – different authors all writing a 100 word story based on the same prompt. This week’s prompt is: “There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room.” This one is my take:

IMG_0351fix

Steam vented from the pipes overhead, adding  humidity and heat to the metallic  scented tunnels. Dice pushed through her fatigue and plodded along.

Lights flickered intermittently through the confined space. They illuminated several doors. Dice ducked into one room, hoping to escape the temperature. There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room. A closer listen near the door revealed the mechanical sound of a motor. The wailing was the screech of an engine belt in need of oil. Hope rekindled itself.

The mission ran through her exhausted mind.

~ About the author ~

Karen E. Hoover has loved the written word for as long as

she can remember. Her favorite memory of her dad is the time he spent with

Karen on his lap, telling her stories for hours on end. Her dad promised he

would have Karen reading on her own by the time she was four years old … and he

very nearly did. Karen took the gift of words her dad gave her and ran with it.

Since then, she’s written two novels and reams of poetry. Her head is fairly

popping with ideas, so she plans to write until she’s ninety-four or maybe even

a hundred and four.

Inspiration is found everywhere, but Karen’s heart is fueled

by her husband and two sons, the Rocky Mountains, her chronic addiction to pens

and paper, and the smell of her laser printer in the morning.
