Author Interview: Lindzee Armstrong, MISS MATCH

I have a fun author interview today with Lindzee Armstrong. She is celebrating the release of her latest book (a contemporary romance), Miss Match. But, before we get to the interview, a little about the book!

MISS MATCH is finally here! I’m so excited to share the rest of Brooke and Luke’s story with the world. To celebrate, it’s on sale for $0.99 this week only. Sale ends May 10th!

About MISS MATCH
Billionaire CEO Luke Ryder doesn’t want to hire his best friend, Brooke, as his matchmaker. Not when he’s been in love with her for eight years. Too bad she doesn’t see him as relationship material and is engaged to another man. If the matchmaking company she works for closes, Brooke is out of a job, and Luke is out a best friend. There will be nothing stopping her from moving to Italy with her fiancé. And Luke isn’t about to let that happen.

Brooke’s dream career may be crumbling, and she will do anything to keep Toujour in the black. Even recruit Luke, America’s favorite bachelor, as her next client. Surely his perfect smile and swollen bank account will send clients swarming to their doors. But when matching up Luke works a little too well, Brooke wonders if she’s with the right man. Maybe she should finally forget Luke’s playboy image and admit he’s changed. All Brooke has to decide is if she’s willing to risk her heart.
Because I’m so excited about this book–and to celebrate Mother’s Day–the short prequel novella, Meet Your Match, will be FREE on kindle from May 6th – May 10th. So you can get both the novella and novel for less than a dollar, this week only! Get your copies before the prices go up! And I hope you enjoy Brooke and Luke’s story.

Now, for our interview!Lindzee Armstrong

(Sticking with questions using the letters from the book title)

Miss Match:

M is for Matchmaking: What drew you to, or gave you the idea of a matchmaking agency?

A few years ago, I saw this commercial for a reality television show about matchmakers. That’s where my initial idea was sparked. I watched the show, and really wasn’t impressed. I thought “I can come up with something way better than this!” and started working more and more on my idea. The show was canceled after only a few episodes, and I don’t even remember the name of it. But I’m glad it was around for a little while or I might never have written this book!

A is for Advice: What life advice would each of your main characters give someone?

I think Brooke’s life advice would be “learn to trust others, even if you get hurt.” Luke’s life advice would be “don’t let fear stop you from making the right choices and decisions.”

T is for Trials: Without spoilers, what do you think you characters have learned through the trails they have gone through?

It’s tied closely to their advice, I think. Brooke learns to trust others, especially men, and to not let her past affect her future. Luke learns that some things are worth taking risks and fighting for.

C is for Continuing: Will this be a continuing series? What will be your ‘continuing’ works (next books)?

Yes! There’s already a prequel novella to the series, Meet Your Match. It tells the story of how Brooke and Luke meet in high school, and can be read before or after Miss Match.

The No Match For Love series will continue for at least two more books, but I’m guessing many more. Book two is tentatively titled Objectionably Matched and will overlap the timeline of Miss Match. That’s Andi’s story. And Book three is Not Your Match, and will be Zoey’s story. It’ll take place a year or so after Miss Match. I’m also hoping to write a few more novellas for this series. The possibilities for this series are really endless! I’ll keep writing on it until I run out of stories to tell.

H is for Hobbies: What are your favorite hobbies?

Wow, hobbies…what are those? 😉 Writing and reading used to be my hobbies, but now they’re my job, and between work and family there isn’t time for much else. But I am a total TV junkie. I love reality TV, dramas, comedies…anything with really compelling characters and an interesting plot. I also enjoy playing the piano, although I rarely have time for that. And I LOVE to travel. We traveled a lot while I was growing up, and my husband and I are doing our best to give our children those same experiences.

Thank you, Lindzee, for visiting with us today! I loved this book (and the prequel novella!). I will be looking forward to the other books in the series too. 🙂

Book Feature: OBSIDIAN THREADS by Charlie Pulsipher

Front

Today I am featuring the second book in The Lost Shards series (Young Adult, Sci Fi/Fantasy) by Charlie Pulsipher entitled Obsidian Threads. I am actually reading the first book in the series, The Crystal Bridge (On sale for $.99 right now) and I am fascinated by it. I am loving the characters, the story line, and world building. So I am really looking forward to getting this book too! Here is the synopsis:

Rho has awakened. Its acolytes will tear worlds apart to release their deity from its prison. Any hope of Rho’s defeat lies with two people lost in a strange universe. Kaden and Aren must learn to harness all their unique gifts if they are to rival the god of darkness reborn.

They will not fight alone. A brilliant geneticist, a furry dwaro, two less than friendly elves, dragons, and a spunky red-haired computer stand with them. But if Kaden and Aren fail to reach their full potential, all of reality will be devoured until nothing remains but Rho.

Author Interview: Tifani Clark SHADOW OF A LIFE

Tifani Clark Blog Tour Banner

I have another author interview today! Today we are visited by Tifani Clark, the author of “Shadow of a Life” (Soul Saver Book 1) — a ghost story based upon the mysterious real life story of the ship Mary Celeste. So, first the cover and a bit about the book:

Shadow of a Life Cover

Jamie Peters plans to spend the summer before her junior year with her nose stuck in a book—not saving lost souls. Usually the girl that blends into the crowd, Jamie’s world is turned upside down when a mysterious ghost begins to follow her.

But Sophia isn’t just any ghost.

A hundred years earlier, Sophia’s disappearance sparked a national mystery that remained unsolved. Jamie knows the legends surrounding Sophia’s disappearance, but she never dreamed she would find out what really happened . . . or that her family might have had something to do with Sophia’s disappearance.

Determined to set Sophia free, Jamie blows the dust off her family’s past and unearths clues to discover what she must do to save Sophia’s soul. She enlists the help of childhood friend—and secret crush—Peter Ashby as she sets off on a dangerous quest to find a missing map. Spending the night in a graveyard, crawling through a dilapidated barn, and staring down the barrel of a gun aren’t enough to deter Jamie from helping Sophia. But can she find the answers she needs before another ghost gets revenge on her and Sophia?

You can find the book here on Amazon or here on Barnes and Noble

Tifani - Author Photo

Tifani Clark grew up on a farm in southeastern Idaho (yes, that’s where they grow all the potatoes) as the middle of five children. She had a lot of space to imagine and daydream and often pictured herself as a character in one of the many books she read. She was habitually found pretending to be Scarlet O’Hara. Tifani loves mystery and hates it when one goes unsolved. She is married to the love of her life and is the mother to four fabulous children. When not writing, she enjoys playing the violin and piano and traveling to new places. She especially enjoys visits to national parks and places of historical significance.

Tifani can be found here: http://www.tifaniclark.blogspot.com/

Now to our interview, based upon the book’s title.

Shadow of a Life

S is for Setting:  Can you tell us about the setting for your book and why you chose that place?

Shadow of a Life takes place in Marion, Massachusetts. The setting for this book was an easy decision for me. Since the book is based on a true story, I chose to focus on the town where the real Sophia Briggs lived. I did a lot of research about the town in an effort to make it as accurate as possible. I even got a close-up look at the town thanks to Google Earth! Some of the places the characters go are real (like the cemetery and the library), but the restaurant they frequent is fictitious.

H is for  Hobbies: What are your favorite things to do?

I have all kinds of things that I enjoy doing. Sometimes it just depends on the day. I play the violin and piano and I have a couple of violin students. I obviously enjoy writing, and reading is just as great. With my family, I love to travel. We want to visit all 50 states and we’re doing pretty good so far.

A is for Advice: What piece of advice would Jamie, Peter, and Sophia each give?

Jamie: “Ordinary people can do extraordinary things.”

Peter: “Life’s an adventure. Hang on and enjoy the ride.”

Sophia: “Always have hope in the future and never give up.”

D is for Danger: Your main character, Jamie, has to face some dangerous things. What would she say she is most afraid of?

Failure. Jamie isn’t afraid of things like spiders, and snakes, and heights…and ghosts. She lacks confidence in herself and is terrified that she won’t accomplish what she set out to do. As the book progresses, her confidence builds and she is able to overcome that fear of failure.

O is for obstacles: What sort of obstacles do your characters overcome (without spoilers) and what do you feel you learned from writing their journey?

My characters find themselves in a few tricky and dangerous situations. Probably the biggest obstacle that the living characters have to overcome is to actually believe in ghosts and a different reality than they’ve ever lived before. The ghost characters have to put their trust in those who are living and that is kind of hard for them.

W is for  “What next”: So what is next for you? Do you have other books in the works?

The first sequel to Shadow of a Life is finished and in the editing phase and the second sequel is in the planning stages. Hopefully it will be completed by the end of the year. I’ve finished a couple other books (Young Adult Suspense) that I’m getting ready to market as well.

Life  If you had a chance as a ghost, to do one thing that you didn’t get an opportunity to do in this life, what would you pick?

Good question! This one made me think. Hmm… I want to see the world. I am fascinated with history and culture and life. I would have to say that I would use my “ghost powers” to travel the world and see things from a non-tourist view. It’s easier to truly experience a new culture when you don’t have tourist written across your forehead.

The book looks really interesting, I’m excited to read it. Thanks for being here today Tifani!

~ About the author ~

Karen E. Hoover has loved the written word for as long as

she can remember. Her favorite memory of her dad is the time he spent with

Karen on his lap, telling her stories for hours on end. Her dad promised he

would have Karen reading on her own by the time she was four years old … and he

very nearly did. Karen took the gift of words her dad gave her and ran with it.

Since then, she’s written two novels and reams of poetry. Her head is fairly

popping with ideas, so she plans to write until she’s ninety-four or maybe even

a hundred and four.

Inspiration is found everywhere, but Karen’s heart is fueled

by her husband and two sons, the Rocky Mountains, her chronic addiction to pens

and paper, and the smell of her laser printer in the morning.

Book feature: THE SHAMAN’S CURSE by Meredith Mansfield

Here is another book I am really excited about. I have read excerpts from this world and it is a wonderfully complex dual magic system fantasy world (along with different cultures). I have read another of Meredith Mansfield’s books and loved it. Really glad this one is out AND on sale for the month of July!

INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL: $0.99 for the month of July only

Shaman's curse cover

 Blurb:

Vatar risked his life to try to save his friend–and failed. Now he has an implacable enemy in the vengeful shaman, who blames Vatar for the death of his only son. In his isolation, Vatar finds some comfort in daydreams. He knows the strange girl he sometimes imagines is just that–a dream. She’d better be.

Because, if she’s real things could get even worse for Vatar. The accepted magic of Vatar’s plains tribe wouldn’t enable him to see or communicate with a girl he doesn’t even know–or know where to find. That would be more like the magic passed down in certain, closely-guarded bloodlines among the ruling class of the coastal cities. And that’s bad. Very bad.

Unlike their own, Vatar’s people think the city magic is evil. If the shaman ever found out, it could be the weapon he needs to destroy Vatar. And yet, finding a way to accept the other side of his heritage may be the only way Vatar can ultimately defeat his enemy.

The two kinds of magic have always been totally separate. Until now.

 Enjoy an Excerpt:

Vatar reined his horse back behind his friends and turned his head slowly to scan around the endless circle of the plains that merged with the sky at the far horizon. The earth was all golden brown now, the grasses prematurely dried up by the lack of rain. Here and there, the green smudges of trees dotted the savannah, marking the waterholes. The darker blue-green line of the Great Forest marked the eastern horizon. Another line of trees, much closer, marked the course of the river. Everything seemed normal, but that spot between his shoulder blades still itched with a premonition of undefined danger that grew stronger the closer they got to the river.

Ariad slowed down to match Vatar’s pace, allowing the other two boys to go ahead. “Lions?”

Vatar shook his head. That was one danger he could dismiss out of hand. His connection to the Spirit of the Lion told him the nearest lions–in the shade at a distant waterhole–were sleeping off a full meal. “None we need to worry about.”

“What then?” Ariad asked.

“I don’t know. Something . . .” Vatar caught himself before he said too much. It was one of his mother’s oldest admonitions–almost as old as “Don’t touch the fire!” From the very first time he’d tried to describe that infrequent feeling of danger, she’d warned him not to mention it to anyone but her and Pa. Even his little sister Kiara didn’t know about it.

Vatar was already different enough–dark-haired and strongly-built among the tall, lanky, fair Dardani. Though she was Dardani now, his mother had come originally from a far-off city on the sea coast. The Dardani would accept his hair color and height, but not anything that even hinted at forbidden magic. Other than a few old stories, Vatar had no idea why his people had such deep-seated superstitious fear of magic, but he knew full well that it was one of the few things they’d never forgive.

Vatar didn’t think the itch between his shoulder blades was magic, any more than his ability to sense lions. That was his connection to his clan’s totem spirit–just like Ariad could sense eagles. But Mother’s caution was second nature by now. He forced one corner of his mouth up in a half-smile. “Maybe I’ve just heard one too many of Pa’s stories about Themyri ambushes.”

Ariad barked a laugh. “Haven’t we all? To hear our fathers tell it, the river is almost as dangerous as the Great Forest.” He shuddered a little at the reference to the one place all plains-dwelling Dardani feared most and made a surreptitious sign against magic and evil spirits. Being Eagle Clan, Ariad’s hand curled in an imitation of an eagle’s talons.

Author Interview: Shauna E. Black, FURY OF THE STORM WIZARD

Today our special guest is Shauna Black, featuring her middle grade historical fantasy, Fury of the Storm Wizard. First the cover and the back blurb about the book:

newcover-without top and bottom titles

A Storm is Brewing

In Silver Valley, an unusual string of mining accidents has locals whispering of dark magic. When the marshal sent to investigate goes missing, his young assistant Boone turns to Jesse and Eliza for help. But Jesse is a new mage with raw magic, and Eliza is hiding a secret. The three must learn to trust each other before the valley is destroyed and they are ripped away from everything they hold dear.

Let’s meet the author:authorphoto-sm

Shauna E. Black fell in love at an early age. Her first romances resided on the shelves of the mystery section in the library. She went through The Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and Sherlock Holmes before someone introduced her to The Chronicles of Prydain. This sparked an enduring love for wizards, dragons, magic, and all things fantasy that Shauna still enjoys today. She always has her head in the clouds and her nose in a book.

Naturally, her love for reading evolved into a desire to create, and she became a writer. When she was a young teen, her English teacher made the mistake of offering extra credit for original short stories, and was suddenly swamped with Shauna’s writing. Dutifully reading each story (at least, she wrote encouraging things in the margins), this teacher inspired Shauna to follow her dreams, leaving her with a warm spot in her heart for all English teachers.

Today, Shauna still keeps a box in the attic full of early manuscripts, most written in pencil on lined paper. She lives in the high desert of the southwest with the other loves of her life: her husband and four children. She likes to drag them along on springtime hiking adventures to the many Anasazi ruins near her home, where she finds inspiration for her writing. She also likes to bake bread, do anything artsy, and travel to exotic locations to collect wind chimes.

And now, based upon the title of the book, our interview questions with Shauna:

S is for Setting: Where does your story take place and what is special about this location?

Fury of the Storm Wizard is a historical fantasy that takes place in the late 1800s in a Colorado mining town. I chose this location because my ancestors worked the silver mines in that area. Although my novel’s town has a different name, it’s based on the mountain community of Lake City, Colorado. I love the mountains and the greenery and the lake in that area, but my character doesn’t like it so much. He’s from Kansas, so he feels boxed in by the mountains all around him.

T is for Trials: What are some of the things (no spoilers) that your characters learn through their trials?

Jesse is the main character. He has a lot of difficult things happen to him in a short amount of time. When his mother dies, he is struck by lightning that gives him powerful wild magic he can’t control at first. Then, his father moves them from the Kansas prairie to the Colorado mountains. He starts to really overcome these trials when he meets Boone (a dragon who can transform into a human) and finds out Boone has gone through similar things, but doesn’t let them get him down. Jesse overcomes his own trials with the support of his family and friends, and learns that he is worthy of being loved, in spite of his mistakes. That knowledge helps him to have courage when he most needs it.

O is for Origins: How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I went to a writing conference where the speaker talked about a line popping into her head that started her first novel. It inspired me. I went home mulling over her talk and all of a sudden a line popped into my head: “Sometimes your mother really does know best. She always said I would come to a sticky end. Of course, my mother was a two-headed dragon.” Along with the words, came a picture of a dragon tangled in rope, hanging over an abandoned mine shaft. I wrote it first as a short story, but discovered that I loved the characters so much that I was compelled to turn it into a novel. Through many revisions, that first line was eventually cut, but Boone still gets tangled in rope over a mine shaft somewhere in the middle of the book.

R is for risks: What would your main characters each say is their greatest risk they have undertaken? How about yours?

When Jesse tells Boone about the huge weight of guilt he carries over the death of his mother and the harmful things his magic has done, he makes himself vulnerable. But he’s rewarded for finally opening up when he and Boone become friends.

As for me, probably the greatest risk I’ve ever taken is in publishing this book. I hope that doesn’t sound cheesy. 🙂 I’m naturally a very shy person, so the idea of putting myself out there in the public eye as a published author is a pretty daunting one, for me. You kind of bleed your heart and soul into writing a book, so it’s also frightening to offer that up as a sacrifice to the critics out there in the world. Will anybody like it? Will they rip it to shreds? I’ve dreamt of being a published author all my life. When I went through a bout with cancer a couple of years ago, I decided that I would no longer let my fear keep me from realizing my dream. But as I was going through the process of getting the book ready for publication, I kept having these little panic attacks. So I would listen to a song my kids like called Go by the McClain Sisters, and there’s one line that says “Don’t be scared, just go!” I would repeat this mantra to myself and try to overcome my fears. It also helped to remember that I had already done something really hard, in overcoming cancer, so I knew I could do this publication thing. I like to visit schools and talk about that with the kids, let them know that they can have courage and overcome things in their lives that seem hard.

M is for magic- I love magic. How does the magic work in your world. Accessible to few or all? Does everyone know it exists?

One of the characters in an earlier incarnation of Fury of the Storm Wizard said something to the effect that magic always comes in a traumatic way, when life deals a potential wizard a rough blow. For example, when Jesse’s mother dies, he’s hit by lightning that sparks the magic already inside him. Then the new wizard has to learn to control this wild magic. So, magic can do wonderful things, but it’s also very powerful and dangerous and requires a strong will to master, in addition to training. A trained wizard, or mage as I call them, works magic by using glyphs—like petroglyphs or hieroglyphs. They get this training at a place called the Veiled Canyon, which is similar to Mesa Verde, only populated with people who have magic and know about it. So, magic is hidden from the general population. Boone is strictly forbidden from turning into his dragon form where non-magical people might see him; but of course, he breaks the rules now and again.

Wizards–  What are the Storm Wizards and are there other types?

A thundermage is the “technical” term for a storm wizard, and that’s what Jesse is. It’s one of the most powerful types of wizards because he can control the weather. I based his acquisition of magic on a real live event: the violent tornado systems that moved through Kansas and nearby states in 1896 and were labeled at that time “The Storm of the Century.” By the way, this is the same event that the Wizard of Oz is based on (the tornado that carries Dorothy to Oz). Other types of wizards with specialized powers include terramage, mirrormage, and dragonmage. You’ll have to read the book to find out what they do. 😉

Book Feature: Warrior Everlasting by Wendy Knight

I present, Wendy Knight’s second book in the Riders of Paradesos series: Warrior Everlasting.

you can find it on Amazon here, or on Barnes and Noble here.

@Warrior Everlasting

What it’s about:

Fighting alongside the boy you shouldn’t love is hard enough. Doing it while riding a unicorn who would gleefully fly to her death with you on her back is worse. What makes it insane?

 Doing it in hell.

Scout and her unicorn, Ashra, risked everything just to make it into Aptavaras. Their plan is to free Scout’s family and the stolen souls, and seek vengeance on the man who took everything Ashra had once lived for. What they hadn’t counted on was Trey and his unicorn, Torz, following them.

It might be the only thing that will save them.

Because in Aptavaras, the soul stealers are many and the chances of survival are slim. Even if they can get past the demons, trick the demon master, rescue the souls and escape with their lives, there’s only one person who can open the gate, and he’s on the outside defending the world. But Scout, Trey, Ashra and Torz have one thing the soul stealers don’t—

 A reason to live.

A sneak peak snippet:

“You’re mad.”

She sighed. “I’m too tired for this right now, Trey. If you want Kylin, then—”

He glared at her. “You lose faith in me that quickly, Scout? I’ve been in love with you since I was eight years old. See these?” He held up his arm with the leather bands tied around his wrist. “Nine of them. One for each year I’ve loved you. I loved you when you hated me. I loved you when you were dancing for some other guy. I loved you when I watched you throw yourself off your unicorn eight billion feet above the ground.” Scout opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Instead, tears trickled down her cheek. Finally, she knew what those leather bands meant. And her heart swelled.

“Just because I talk to Kylin doesn’t mean I’m going back to her. What have I ever done to make you doubt me, Scout? And if you say the hospital—” His glare was more fierce than she’d ever seen it. Clearly, he’d heard enough about the hospital.

Scout smiled, scrubbing at her tears. “Nothing, Trey. You’ve done nothing to make me doubt you. I’m sorry. I’m just tired and insecure.”

His hand shot out, circling her waist, and he pulled her into him, so close she could feel his heart pounding inside his chest, and he kissed her like he would literally die if he didn’t. There was pain and fury and hope and love in that kiss. Scout rose on her toes and slid her arms around his neck, kissing him back, hoping he could feel that she felt the same way.

My thoughts:

Wow. I fell in love with these characters in the first book and this one didn’t disappoint. This is the unicorn story for people who don’t like unicorns. They battle soul stealing demons and they rock. This story had a lot of moments where you thought ‘ oh, they are never going to make it’ and they do. The battles are awesome and the people are broken, real and full of history that they need to learn to overcome. I love that Scout is the best big sister. Her focus on her sister and their bond is wonderful. I also really liked the ‘big bad guy’. He wasn’t evil just for evil’s sake, he was understandable, pitiable, and yet- still a monster. I am looking forward to the next installation in the story!
