WonHundred Word Wednesday: They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later
This week’s prompt is : “They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later.” We take that prompt and write a 100 word flash fiction story. It is fun to see all the different directions that one sentence can take a group of writers. Come play!
I’m a professional genealogist. People hire me to help them hunt down their missing roots. From proving their ancestors were in the civil war, to proving that their ancestors had nothing to do with the same. There’re different reasons and different results for everyone.
They say everyone who looks into their family history will find a secret sooner or later. For example: wandering through an abandoned cemetery doing gravestone rubbings for a client, I tripped over a body. Unlike the rest of the descent cemetery residents, this one was unburied and freshly killed. Not the secret I was hoping for.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “There was nothing left of the money except…”
This week’s 100 word story is based on the prompt: “There was nothing left of the money except…”
Betsy lay silently under piles of blankets on the massive bed. Outside the bedroom, family—but still virtual strangers—argued fruitlessly over her fortune.
There was nothing left of the money except for the memories.
A whirlwind romance and marriage on the Grand Canal in Venice.
A lonely, makeshift funeral on a battlefield only four years later.
There were schools and orphanages in Nepal and wells dug for villages in Africa.
Even the estate and the manor were promised. They had been donated to an addiction recovery program.
She alone could hold the memories. And they were greater than treasure.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “He didn’t understand…”
This week’s prompt is: “He didn’t understand what he’d done to her, but he would by the time she was finished.”
This one was admittedly tricky for me because I don’t generally enjoy revenge tales. The character needs something else besides that to get me through a whole story with them. So this is my twist on it 🙂
He didn’t understand what he’d done to her, but he would by the time she was finished. Her fingers shook with rage. And still she was able to savagely, meticulously, snap each and every one of his crayons.
He would know the pain. Balance could be restored to daycare.
Her four-year old mind flashed to the image of him, holding scissors. And a single golden lock tumbling from her doll to crash silently on the floor.
The memory made her reach for his glue stick and toss away the cap. Never would he unthinkingly wield those tools of destruction again.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “He hadn’t meant to scare the child.”
Welcome to WonHundred Word Wednesday. Where a group of authors take a prompt and create a 100 word story. This week’s prompt is: “He hadn’t meant to scare the child.” After looking at my take, I believe I need more sleep. 🙂
He hadn’t meant to scare the child. But to be honest, the child had done a great job of scaring him too. It wasn’t like he was trained to do this.
“Come work at the circus,” they said. “Lots of fun,” they said.
What was fun about crawling through shrubbery looking for a lost monkey riding a boa constrictor?
He had just caught the runaways and was backing out of the bushes when he bumped into the kid.
There were screams from him and the child.
A terrified monkey and panicked snake.
Broken rib and scratches.
“Sure, lots of fun.”

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town”
This week’s prompt for our 100 word story is: “Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town.” Here is my take and then you can read what the other authors did with this same prompt!
Most vivid amongst the memories of his home town was that of the giant oak tree. And the dead body that hung from it.
John was seven before he realized that no one else could see the man hanging from the branch, twisting gently in the nonexistent breeze.
There were others as well.
When his momma sang with the church choir, her voice carrying the gospel music to the rafters, others would join in. They stood with their hats in their hands, or dresses freshly starched, swaying and belting out the songs.
But no one else could hear them.
Now check out the others’ 🙂

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “She had found something that would mean she’d never be poor, but there was a catch…”
Each week we (a group of authors) take the same prompt and then each write a 100 word story about it. This week’s prompt is: “She had found something that would mean she’d never be poor again, but there was a catch…”
I believe I was in an odd mood while writing this one, you be the judge 🙂 .
Cathy had found something that would mean she’d never be poor again – but there was a catch, she could never eat chocolate again. Oh, and she was slowly being driven insane.
When the cheap, hollow chocolate Easter bunny—with the googly, sugar eyes—first spoke to her, it was hard to believe. It begged her not to bite its ears off in exchange for treasures.
It seemed like an easy promise: no chocolate, no poverty.
But then, the bunny wouldn’t stop talking. The sound followed her everywhere. And Cathy wondered just how sweet those waxy chocolate ears would taste.
Now you can check the others’ versions! Enjoy –

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “The fire was getting closer.”
This week’s prompt is: “The fire was getting closer.” My take on the 100 word story is this:
Joseph shuffled across the cabin floor. He still wore his official, green Forest Service pants. But, years after retirement, the work shirts didn’t fit quite right anymore. He settled for a t-shirt.
He muttered at the moth-eaten, bearskin rug near the fireplace. “Don’t you roll your eyes at me, son. I put you on that floor and I will make sure you stay there.”
He stepped outside. The tremor in his hands stilled when he grasped the shovel and the hose with determination. The fire was getting closer. It wouldn’t take his cabin, Beverly’s last resting place, without a fight.
There are a bunch of other authors who are also writing their 100 word story based upon this prompt. Check them out too 🙂

WondHundred Word Wednesday: “She decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice…”
I am slow on last week’s 100 word story. So, here is the prompt and my take on it!
“She decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice…”
Melinda settled down in the grass and leaned her back against the cool granite of the tombstone. She had decided to go to her father’s grave, to ask his advice. She pulled the cigar, his favorite brand, out of her jacket and heaved a sigh.
“Daddy, I know you are super busy. But, I could really use your help.” The silence seemed to mock her. “I don’t know what to do next with my current case.”
The distinct scent of cigar smoke drifted past on the breeze, accompanied by a whisper. “Check the box in the victim’s closet.”
Melinda grinned.

WondHundred Wednesday: “He had waited twenty years to return it.”
Wednesday! A group of author receives a prompt and writes a 100 word story from it. It is fun to see the different directions they head. This is my take on the prompt “He had waited twenty years to return it.”
Darren gripped the small box in his hand. He had waited twenty years to return it. He looked around his hometown, first time in decades, with new eyes.
“Sorry it took me so long to come back around, Ma.” He shuffled his feet in the silence. “I wish Annie and Molly could have come so they could meet you. Molly is getting her first teeth in and is cute as a button.”
He opened the box and pulled out the broken earing. He set it, and a fresh daisy, down gently on the headstone. “I think you’d be proud, Ma.”
