WonHundred Word Wednesday: “Spare some change please?”

One prompt. 100 words.  This week’s prompt is “Spare some change, please?” Check out my version and then you can go see what awesomeness the other authors came up with based on the same prompt!

From where I sat on the park bench, I could see the front of the ambassador’s home. I watched closely over the newspaper, sunglasses hiding my eyes—and my earpiece.  The homeless man shuffled up the sidewalk near me.  I had already sized him up and found his weak points—if it came to that—the leg with the limp and the arm held closely to his side.  He paused near the bench.

                “Spare some change, please?”

I didn’t turn my head.  “Jake.” I sighed. “For this mission to work we can’t be seen together.”

                He chuckled and shambled away.

Now the others’. Enjoy!

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room.”

This is the day again, Wednesday! – different authors all writing a 100 word story based on the same prompt. This week’s prompt is: “There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room.” This one is my take:

IMG_0351fix

Steam vented from the pipes overhead, adding  humidity and heat to the metallic  scented tunnels. Dice pushed through her fatigue and plodded along.

Lights flickered intermittently through the confined space. They illuminated several doors. Dice ducked into one room, hoping to escape the temperature. There was a strange wailing sound coming from the next room. A closer listen near the door revealed the mechanical sound of a motor. The wailing was the screech of an engine belt in need of oil. Hope rekindled itself.

The mission ran through her exhausted mind.

Find the generator.

Shut it down.

Free us all.

Now you can read the others’- enjoy!

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “The urge to interrupt him before he had finished was overwhelming”

Our prompt for this week is: “The urge to interrupt him before he had finished was overwhelming.” From that we write a 100 word story.

WonHundred Wednesday7_30

The peddler droned on. The urge to interrupt him before he had finished was overwhelming.

“I don’t need a vacuum cleaner. Nor do I need a whole set of Encyclopedias.”

He narrowed his eyes and looked deep into mine. “Of course, an enterprising young man such as yourself has no need for such mundane items.” He rummaged in his large sack. “However, I have just what you need.”

“I seriously doubt that.” But I was fixated on that pack. What could he mean?

With a sly grin, he pulled out of his bag the exact spellbook I had been seeking.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “The pink glove lay on the ground, almost covered. . .”

This week’s prompt is: “The pink glove lay on the ground, almost covered. . .” A bunch of writers each do a 100 word story based on the weekly prompt. Here is mine:

WonHundred Wednesday7_23

AbbyJane scrambled through the debris. The smoke was starting to thicken and she ducked lower to avoid the worst of it.

I can’t stay. But I can’t leave yet. “I have to find it.”

She dug through the rubble and gasped, immediately coughing from the fumes.

The pink glove lay on the ground, almost covered by the rubble. She snatched it up and quickly reached into the empty fingers.

The ancient ring was still in there. Relief washed over her. She scrambled out of the room with her family’s heirloom still in her possession.

“I’m never taking it out again.”

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “It was time. She’d fought against it for so long.”

It is that time of the week again. A bunch of authors take the same prompt and writ a 100 word story about it. The prompt for this week is: “It was time. She’d fought against it for so long.”

WonHundred Wednesday 7_16

It was time. She’d fought against it for so long. But fifty years of arguments, fights, underhanded stunts, and trickery had worn her down.

She was almost eighty years old. She couldn’t keep up the battle.

She pulled the paper toward her and glared at the person across from her. “Fine. I’ll sign it.” Her hand shook as she scrawled her signature across the bottom line. “I hope you’re finally happy, Mildred. The souvenir tea spoons are yours.”

The other woman cackled with maniacal glee.  “Finally mine! Don’t try to hide any.”

“I won’t. I hope you choke on them.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “It was just for one night.”

Today’s prompt for our 100 word story is: “It was just for one night.”

WonHundred Wednesday 7_9

Princess Kiva clutched her growling stomach. The sound echoed alarmingly in the silent tomb. It was just for one night, but the kingdom depended upon it. Potential rulers had failed in the past.

She had gone through every purification ritual and now she needed to spend the entire night amongst her ancestors—the wisdom of the ages—to prove she could lead the country.

Otherwise there would be civil war.

She settled down against the cold stone of the tomb. There was an errant sound. A hiss, and dry scales brushing through dust.

Had other ancestors failed?

Or been assassinated?

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “She had to find the necklace before. . .”

This week’s prompt for our 100 word story is: “She had to find the necklace before. . .”

WonHundred Wednesday 7_2

This was absolutely the last wedding Jenessa was planning. There had been crazy things before, but today had been disastrous. The bride decided—last minute, mind you—that there was a particular piece of jewelry she had to have. Jenessa had scrambled from one end of the city to the other. She had to find the necklace before the wedding luncheon.

She finally found it.

All for nothing.

Jenessa had dealt with terrible brides before, but this one took the cake. And the presents.

And apparently took the best man too.

The wedding was cancelled in a shout-fest.

Never. Again.

Oh no she didn’t!

Now see what all the other authors did with this same prompt 🙂

WonHundred Word Wednesday: Reluctantly, he handed over the key.

Today’s one hundred word story is based on the prompt: “Reluctantly, he handed over the key.”

WonHundred Wednesday 6_25

Reluctantly, he handed over the key. Of course, the reluctance was all for show. That fool Overmaster grinned—self-satisfactory way of his—and held his hand out. The steam-powered guards flanked the Overmaster and watched to make sure Devin didn’t try anything funny.

So Devin passed off the key without a fight. He didn’t need to suggest that the Overmaster should be the first one through the locked door. He knew the arrogant man wouldn’t let anyone else in with the treasure.

Devin also didn’t mention the beast that waited inside that room.

Watching over the treasure.

Eating trespassers.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: “My heart pounded wildly”

This week’s prompt for our 100 word story is: “My heart pounded wildly.”

WonHundred Wednesday 6_18

My heart pounded wildly as my feet scrabbled for a toe-hold. My upper arm strength was pretty impressive, if I do say so myself, but even I couldn’t dangle by my fingertips all night.

“Next time, Jake, I’ll make the plan. And you’ll put on the cat suit and scale the cliff wall.” With a gasp I stretched further and my foot found purchase against one of the rocks.

“I thought we’re on radio silence.” His smooth voice carried through the earpiece. “Besides, I like the view from down here.”

“And I like it better when you’re quiet.” Total eyeroll.

WonHundred Word Wednesday: He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching.

Today’s 100 word story goes with the prompt: He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching.

WonHundred Wednesday 6_11

He paused in the open doorway of his classroom. He hadn’t seen anything like it in twenty years of teaching. There, in the center of the room, were all the desk and chairs.

All stacked together in a large, inverse pyramid.

He tried to see how the single chair on the bottom was supporting the expanse above it, but he didn’t want to get too close.

The room hummed with the alien energy. He was relieved he cleared everyone out in time. So his class—his kids—wouldn’t be anywhere near whatever was in those ships that had appeared above.
